A fellow of three APA divisions and board-certified in rehabilitation psychology, Dr. Elliott has received numerous accolades, including the 2015 Mitch Rosenthal Lectureship and Award for Lifetime Mentorship and the Outstanding Educator Alumni Award from the Auburn University College of Education. He served on the Defense Health Board's Neurological/Behavioral Health Subcommittee, the APA's Presidential Caregiver Task Force. He held editorial positions for multiple journals including editor-in-chief for Rehabilitation Psychology and the Journal of Clinical Psychology. He co-edited the first and third editions of the Handbook of Rehabilitation Psychology.

Elliott's research centers on adjustment to chronic and disabling health conditions, with a particular focus on social and intrapersonal factors in post-disability adaptation. With over 300 peer-reviewed publications and more than 15 years of federal funding, he pioneered telehealth interventions for family caregivers, conducting the first randomized clinical trials for caregivers of individuals with spinal cord injuries, and for caregivers of those with traumatic brain injuries.

In 2008, Elliott established Texas A&M's first telehealth site in Leon County and a second in Madison County in partnership with the School of Public Health. He was the Founding Executive Director of the Telehealth Counseling Clinic, soon entrusting its leadership to Dr. Carly McCord, his former graduate advisee. His humble and empowering mentorship was instrumental in launching Dr. McCord's career and shaping the success of telehealth programs at Texas A&M.
